November 1, 2009 In an ominous sign of what was to come on Halloween night, the Washington State University football team took all of 53 seconds off the clock for their first offensive possession. The Cougars went all of three downs, punted the ball - and then it took Notre Dame approximately three and a half minutes to score their first points of the quarter - a field goal. At the tail end of the first frame, the Cougars allowed a touchdown and were down 9-0 to add nine more points to their atrocious season-long first quarter scoring stats which now read: Opponents - 121, WSU - 3. Wazzu nearly doubled their half of that number when they blocked the Fighting Irish's extra point attempt and defensive back/safety Chima Nwachukwu scooped it up and attempted to race down the sideline for a two-point score?only to get pulled down from behind a few yards from paydirt. It was destined to be that kind of fright night for the Cougars. Notre Dame tacked on two more touchdowns - for a 23-0 second quarter lead - before Wazzu finally came to life and true freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel found sophomore receiver Jeff Karstetter in the end zone to make it 23-7. However, despite the lead, Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis instructed quarterback Jimmy Clausen to heave the ball into the end zone on the last play of the first half where receiver Golden Tate outjumped two Cougars to bring down the ball and make it 30-7 going into halftime. From there, Notre Dame put it on cruise control and scored only 10 points in the second half while Tuel hit Karstetter for another touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the game its final margin. +++++++sponsored by Greg Davis Sports Photography+++++++++ Summer is almost over?and you know what that means? It's time for a whole new season of Cougar Athletics!
