Trying for anything three times in a row - strikes in baseball, presidential elections, lotteries, eating macaroni and cheese - is extremely difficult if not verging on the impossible, so it is with both a dejected but understanding tone that the Telepathic Tabernacle must admit to missing three straight skunks last week when the TeleTab went 3-1 in the Straight Up Division. Still, 12-1 for the last three weeks is nothing to sniffle at. Unfortunately, the lone miss was USC over Oregon - in retrospect, a game that the Tab should not have missed - but going with the odds is usually the safe bet in the Pete Carroll era - or has been until this year. The week began with California and Arizona State doing exactly - exactly - what the Tab expected them to do, with the Fighting Tedfords winning and ASU covering, to give both the SU and ATS Divisions a good start. But then Oregon State did what the Tab was suspecting they might do - make an easy home victory look difficult - and blew a big lead to blow the cover. Nice, Rodents. Wazzu did what they have always done this year - cover the big number - it is like clockwork - and the good part is that the Tab got a Gem of the Week out of it. Then came the final game of the week - the big one between USC and the Nikes and the Tab should have seen that one coming from a mile away but some ceegar smoke clouded up the crystal ball or something. Still, the SU Division stays at a respectable 74% success rate in 2009 while the ATS Division remains staunchly perched at the equator with a 50% on the year - not great, but not losing money either. The Gem took one more step closer to respectability with Wazzu's help and now sits at 4-5 on the season.

Week 10 features some delectable appetizers and one main course. Stanford hosts the Nikes this week and the Trees always perform much better at home but the Tab would like to see double digits on that game to make it a Gem-worthy candidate. Washington and UCLA play in this week's Who Cares? Special, so the Tab tosses them to the curb with the rest of the garbage. The Rodents travel to joust with the feisty Tedfords in Strawberry Canyon and the Tab wants no part of that as neither team is trustworthy. Speaking of not being trustworthy, did somebody say USC? Normally, the Tab would like 10 points on the road against ASU but after last week's debacle, the Tab is not sold on the girls of Troy any longer and the Tab is certainly not going to put the precious Gem's reputation on the line for that team. So, it is back to the well. Wazzu is getting another big number this week and what does that mean? Time to go to the bank. The Tab selects Wazzu to cover as the official Gem of the Week. The rest of this week's swaying swipes of sweet patooties?.
