V-Cast: 2010 Spartan basketball class one of the best

EAST LANSING - Michigan State coach Tom Izzo introduced latest recruiting class during a press conference at the Breslin Center Wednesday afternoon.

The four-man group is ranked No. 5 in the nation by And it is Izzo's hope that the recruiting class of Adreian Payne, Keith Appling, Alex Gauna, and Russell Byrd helps Michigan State fulfill a program goal of winning additional Big Ten and national championships.

Izzo spent less time discussing the individuals in his recruiting class and more time discussing program goals that the longtime Michigan State coach wants to see his Spartans achieve. Izzo spent much of his time talking about his goal of winning a third national championship in basketball for the university. Izzo also spoke at length about players like Steve Smith, Ervin "Magic" Johnson, and Mateen Cleaves, who put winning ahead of everything else in their basketball careers.

None of the four players signed by Michigan State has the natural leadership qualities that would lead to a comparison between great leaders in the program's past. But the players Michigan State signed on Wednesday love the game of basketball and they deepen the talent pool in the Spartan program.

With emerging leaders like Draymond Green, a sophomore power forward, Michigan State might have the leadership in place already for the Spartans to chase more banners when Appling, Payne, Gauna, and Byrd arrive on campus next summer.
After the signing day press conference, staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk stepped outside the Breslin Center to discuss Izzo's latest class and the potential impact the four-man group could have on Michigan State's future as a basketball program.

Comparoni believes that the tandem of Appling and Payne is better than the duo of Marcus Taylor and Zach Randolph, who were both ranked in the Top 10 when they signed with Michigan State.

Izzo said during his press conference Wednesday that his 2010 class has the potential to be one of the better groups he has brought to East Lansing.
