Wazzu Holds Off USC

It was yet another poor shooting night for the members of the Washington State University women's hoop team, but fortunately for them, it was an even worse night of shooting for USC and Wazzu took advantage of USC's shooting woes for a 64-52 win over the Women of Troy Los Angeles. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 7-18 overall and 2-12 in conference play.

The game did not start out well for the Cougars as they were able to score only 10 points in the first 11 minutes of the game and were down 19-10 before finally beginning to hit some buckets. Wazzu went on a 10-1 run to tie the game at 20 with 5:56 left in the half, then took the lead at 27-26 when sophomore guard April Cook hit a fast break layup. The Cougars extended that lead to three, at 32-29, at halftime.

In the second half, USC tied the game within the first three minutes of the half, but could never fully overtake Wazzu as the Cougars held off the Women of Troy for the entire half en route to only their second conference win of the year.

True freshman point guard Kiki Moore finished with 19 points while Cook added 18. The Cougars finished shooting 39.3% for the evening.

NOTES:

- Cook and Moore were both perfect from the free throw line with a combined 8-for-8 effort [six for Moore and two for Cook].

- USC shot 27.5% for the game.

The Cougars continue Pac-10 conference play on Saturday, February 20 at 4 PM when they play UCLA in Los Angeles
