Wazzu Blisters Beavers

The Washington State University Cougar women's hoop team finally broke through the ice and won their first Pac-10 conference game of the year as Wazzu defeated the Beavers, 58-50 in Corvallis. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 1-3 in conference play and 3-13 overall.

Wazzu's hot hand in Eugene on Thursday night evaded them in the first 10 minutes of the game in Corvallis as Oregon State scored the game's first seven points when the Cougars could not find a basket until 13:30 remained in the half. Redshirt freshman Ireti Amojo hit Wazzu's first points but another couple minutes would pass before Amojo hit a three-ball to bring the Cougars within two at 7-5. True freshman Brandi Thomas gave the Cougars the lead with a three-point play the standard way. The Beavers responded to re-take the lead and for the remainder of the half, each team traded leads with neither team able to get more than five points away from the other. Oregon State finally claimed a small portion of control and took a slim 28-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Wazzu quickly took the Beavers' halftime lead and pushed it out to a 35-33 when redshirt freshman Sage Romberg converted a three-point play. Oregon State grabbed it right back with a 5-0 run to lead 38-35 with 9:56 remaining in the game, but on Wazzu's next possession, Amojo knotted it up at 38 with a trey and after a Beaver free throw, sophomore Carly Noyes gave the Cougars a 40-39 lead with 8:46 left in the game. Wazzu then embarked on a 20-11 game-clinching run as they held Oregon State to a pair of late three pointers from the field for the remainder of the game.

Romberg led Wazzu with 21 points while Amojo added 11 points and Romberg and Katie Madison each corralled five rebounds for the Cougars.

NOTES:

- The Cougars out-rebounded the Beavers on defense [27-26] in the game.

- The Cougars hit on 33% [7of-21] of their treys in the game.
