Arizona Stymies Cougs
One week ago, the Washington State University volleyball program was riding high and coming off a gigantic upset of the Pac-10's top team and rival, Washington - and now they are below .500 in the league after a pair of road losses in the desert. The latest loss came courtesy of the Arizona Wildcats, who defeated the Cougars in four sets. With the loss, the Cougars are now 16-6 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
The first set was tight until, tied at eight, Arizona broke it open with a 7-2 run which the Wildcats used as the founding momentum for a 25-18 victory in the set.
Wazzu responded to the first set loss by taking command in the second set with an 8-4 run after the set was tied at 12. From there, the Cougars were able to stave off a Wildcat attempt at a comeback and captured a 25-21 win.
But the victorious feeling was short-lived. Arizona hammered the Cougars in the third set, building a gigantic lead and coasting home for an easy 25-11 win.
The fourth set was closer but no different result-wise, as the Cougars fell behind by six at 19-13 and were never able to close the gap to less than three points in losing, 25-21.
Senior Cassie Robbins was the only Cougar in double figures in kills with 14 while true freshman Oceana Bush was the only Cougar in double figures in digs with 15 and senior setter Renee Bordelon added 37 assists.
Wazzu continues Pac-10 play against California at 7pm on Friday, November 6 at Bohler Gym in Pullman.
