Boise State QB Brett Rypien Putting Family Ties Aside vs WSU

PULLMAN – For roughly 10 months between his sophomore and junior year in high school, Brett Rypien looked at all the pretty girls, weighed his options and selected Boise State as the one he wanted to settle down with.

At least that’s how his father, Tim Rypien, explained the recruitment process.

“I look at it like, you’re dating a bunch of pretty girls, they’re all pretty good but you want to spend the rest of your life with one,” Tim said. “Brett had a plan and that plan ended up in Boise. He just thought it was the best fit for him.”

Brett is the nephew of former Washington State quarterback Mark Rypien, who dawned Crimson and Grey from 1982-85 and led the Cougars to a 7-14-1 record as the teams’ starter from ’84-85. Brett attended Shadle Park High School in Spokane, Washington, the same as his uncle and his father.

Saturday, the Rypien family will travel to Boise from as far north as Coleman, Alberta, Canada, and as far west as Snoqualmie, Washington, to support the Broncos’ starting quarterback. Mark, while publically supporting the Cougars, is expected to join the immediate Rypien family members in support of Brett against WSU.

“Oh we’re 100 percent Boise,” Tim said, when asked if there is any possible family division heading into Saturday. “Mark is the only goofball. Even though my mom and her sister went to WSU they are pulling hard for Boise. They want Boise State all the way. Mark is the only one I think that says it publically, but you know he’s pulling for Brett and obviously he wants him to do well.”

WSU Head Coach Mike Leach, who extended Rypien his scholarship on Nov. 27, 2012, along with then-inside wide receivers’ coach Dave Yost, sees the same player now as he did when he scouted him at Shadle Park.

“Really pretty similar,” Leach said on seeing Brett in high school verses at Boise State. “[He’s] just got good skills and steadily improved. I thought [in high school] he was accurate, thought he made good decisions.”

In the Broncos season opener against Louisiana Layafette, Rypien completed 22 of 33 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-10 win on the road. Returning home to the famous Blue Turf, with the potential for additional distractions, Brett embodied the message his mother, Julie Rypien, instilled in him throughout his recruitment when speaking with the media this week: remain humble and be yourself.

“At the end of the day, I wanted to try something different,” Brett said Monday on a conference call via the Seattle Times. “Boise State runs a multiple, pro style offense that was a better fit for me.”

From the opening kickoff until the stadium clock strikes 0:00, whether it be a Washington State or Boise State victory, no school colors will be able to divide the Rypien family on Saturday.
