Bruins Crush Cougars

Consistency is the most difficult concept of collegiate athletics. Coaches preach it, athletes attempt to maintain it and fans and well-wishers expect it - but it rarely comes. The Washington State University volleyball team gave a textbook definition of execution of lack of consistency when, a mere 24 hours after sweeping aside the USC Women of Troy, they were crushed by the UCLA Bruins in three quick sets at Bohler Gym In Pullman. With the loss, the Cougars are now 15-4 overall and dropped to sixth place at 4-4 in conference play.
It was all over quickly for the Cougars in the first set as UCLA obliterated the Cougars from the outset and crushed any subsequent comeback attempts en route to an easy 25-12 victory.
Wazzu made a better showing of themselves in the second set, taking as much as a four-point lead at one point, and were seemingly on the verge of taking the second set leading 24-22 - when UCLA rolled off four consecutive points to steal the set from the Cougars, 26-24.
The third and final set was identical to the first in the final score but once again, Wazzu accounted for themselves well in the beginning, only to fizzle out midway through the set and watch helplessly as UCLA embarked on a 10-2 run to end the set and match with a 25-12 win.
No Cougar was able to reach double figures in kills as sophomore Meagan Ganzer led the team with eight in that category while true freshman Oceana Bush had 15 digs apiece to lead the team there. Senior setter Renee Bordelon added 23 assists.
Wazzu continues Pac-10 play against Washington at 7pm on Friday, October 23 at Bohler Gym in Pullman.
