California Crushes Cougars

The Washington State University football team never arrived in San Francisco and the California Bears crushed a team resembling the Cougars, 30-7 to all but dash the hopes of the Cougars staying out of the Pac-12 North basement and put head coach Paul Wulff's job in serious jeopardy. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 1-5 in conference play and 3-6 overall on the year.
Wazzu went three and out on their first offensive possession against the formidable California defense and only four minutes and three seconds into the game, much-maligned Bear quarterback Zach Maynard tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Miller for a 7-0 California lead. The Bears' defense continued to shut down the Wazzu offense and after a 29-yard pass play from Maynard to receiver Keenan Allen took it down to the two-yard line, Bears' running back Isi Sofele went over for the touchdown to make it 13-0 after the extra point was blocked [perhaps the only good thing to happen for Wazzu in the first quarter].

In the second quarter, California added another touchdown as running back C.J. Anderson ran in for a five-yard touchdown run to make it 20-0 in favor of the Bears and Bears' placekicker Giorgio Tavecchio added a 43-yard field goal to make it 23-0 going into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, California only took two minutes and 43 seconds to score as Will Kapp scampered 43 yards for a touchdown to make it 30-0. Sofele fumbled on the last play of the third quarter - giving Wazzu the ball on the California 17-yard line after a nine-yard return by linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis - and Wazzu finally got on the scoreboard with a five-yard touchdown run from running back Rickey Galvin to make it 30-7 and the game's final points.
NOTES:
The California defense held the Cougars' offense to only 22 yards total offense in the first half.
California head coach jeff Tedford has not lost to the Cougars since 2002.
