Cornhuskers Hold Off Cougars

The Washington State University Cougar women's hoop team continued the non-conference portion of their 2010-11 season with a tilt against the Nebraska Cornhuskers - and the Cougars are still looking for their first win of the season as Wazzu gave Nebraska a run for their money but the Cornhuskers held off the Cougars, 87-79 at Beasley Coliseum in Portland. With the loss, the Cougars remain winless on the year at 0-4 overall.
Unlike the previous meeting with Nebraska last year - which resulted in an embarrassing 107-54 loss in Lincoln - the Cougars were much more competitive this time around with the Cornhuskers visiting the Palouse. The two teams battled throughout much of the first half, exchanging leads but with neither squad able to fully take control of the game, and the Cornhuskers entered the locker room with a 44-42 lead.

But defense continues to be an issue with the Cougars - who are allowing 82 points per game - and Nebraska exploited that defense by shooting 60% in the second half to take a 10-point lead late in the game. Wazzu fought back with sophomore Carly Noyes hitting a layup to cut the lead to a mere two points at 81-79 with 1:10 remaining in the contest. But the Cornhuskers score the last six points to close the deal.
Noyes led a trio of Cougars in double digits in scoring with 19 points, followed by redshirt freshman Ireti Amojo with 13 and true freshman Hana Potter with 10.
NOTES:
- The Cougars once again shot poorly from the field shot at 44% [35-for-79] as a team in the game and made only five of 15 three-point shot attempts.
- Official attendance for the game was 541.
