Cougs Burst Bruins Bubble

Cougar head football coach Bill Doba got lucky again. Coming into this week's game against UCLA, Doba was 3-1 against the Bruins – the best record he had against any conference opponent – and he attributed it to "good luck". Well, Lady Luck came a'callin' again for Doba as injury-riddled UCLA scored the first touchdown of the game and then watched almost helplessly as players fell by the wayside and Wazzu scored 27 unanswered points to give the Bruins their first conference defeat of the season, 27-7, at Martin Stadium in Pullman. The win also gave the Cougars their first conference win of the year and improved their record to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Pac-10 play.
It was a career night for redshirt sophomore running back Dwight Tardy as he rushed a career-high 35 times [which placed him 10th on the all-time list] for a career-high 214 yards [which was good enough for 9th on the all-time list]. After UCLA's Kahlil Bell ran for a 50-yard touchdown on the third offensive play of the game, Tardy answered with a one-yard plunge to tie it up in the first quarter. Later in the quarter, senior kicker Romeen Abdollmohammadi hit what would prove to be the game-winning points on a career-high 41-yard field goal.

Tardy later added a 50-yard touchdown run to pad his total and put the game out of reach of the Bruins, who came in with high expectations but left, instead, with injuries to Bell and receiver Brandon Breazell who was tagged by Wazzu safety Xavier Hicks, Jr. on a play over the middle in the first half and did not return to the game.
The Cougar defense was also part of the story of the game as they held the Bruins to their second-lowest point total of the year and limited Patrick Cowan to only 167 yards passing while sacking him twice – courtesy of Andy Mattingly and Kevin Kooyman.
The Cougars continue their 2007 season next week against California on Saturday, November 3, in Berkeley.
