Cougs prevail in second game of Italy trip as Hawkinson scores 26

PISA, Italy – Seniors Josh Hawkinson and Ike Iroegbu each had a double-double leading a group of five Washington State men's basketball players in double-figure scoring in a 95-80 victory over Cusground Pisa on Tuesday at Palazzetto dello Sport.

The Cougars move to 2-0 on their Italian foreign tour which began Aug. 4 and concludes Aug. 14. Hawkinson finished with 26 points, after scoring 24 in the previous game, adding 12 rebounds.

Iroegbu had 13 points and 10 assists along with 5 steals, while junior Derrien King added 13 points, freshman Malachi Flynn 12 and redshirt sophomore KJ Langston 10. The Cougars shot .486 (34-for-70) from the field and assisted on 18 shots.

As a team the Cougars were 20-for-25 from the free throw line for a .800 clip. Andrea Casella led Cusground Pisa with 17 points, while Roberto Bertolini had 9 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. As a team they shot .410 (25-for-61) from the field and the Cougars had 17 steals on 24 Cusground turnovers.

Cusground Pisa jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in a very physical game. WSU used a 7-0 run of its own to tie the game with seven minutes to go in the first quarter. Cusground then countered with another 7-0 run to go up 14-7 with 5:44 to go in the first.

Just when Cusground looked like it'd pull away leading 20-15 with 35 seconds to go in the first quarter, the Cougars tied the game with a second to go in the first. In the second quarter WSU extended its run to 12-0 to take a 27-20 lead two minutes into the quarter. After the Cougars led by as many as 11 in the second quarter, Cusground came back to tie the game and eventually trailed by 4, 53-49, at halftime.

WSU came out strong in the third quarter and finished the period with a 13-point (77-64) lead. Despite threats by Cusground Pisa in the fourth quarter, WSU held on with a 95-80 victory.

The Cougars head to Vicenza Wednesday. Their next game is Thursday, Aug. 11 at Palazzetto dello Sport in Vicenza against Vicenze Select.
