Cougs Snap Stanfords Streak

The Stanford Cardinal had not lost to the Washington State Cougar football team in Pullman since 1997 – a strange, unnatural streak that came to an end tonight when Wazzu staved off a late Cardinal comeback attempt then put the game on ice when senior Husain Abdullah took a 55-yard interception return to the house for the final points in a 33-17 win that improved WSU to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Pac-10.

Similar to last week's game against California, the Cougars had another sluggish first half as they struggled to get the ball into the end zone but were still able to come away with a 10-0 halftime lead thanks to two missed field goals from Stanford kicker Derek Belch. The lone first half highlight was redshirt senior Alex Brink's 71st career touchdown pass that moved him past Jason Gesser on the all-time Cougar career list.

Both offense came alive in the second half, however, as Stanford quarterback Tavita Pritchard – the nephew of legendary Cougar quarterback, Jack Thompson - led the Cardinal down the field on two touchdown drives to cut the Cougar lead to three points. But senior kicker Romeen Abdollmohammadi had another career evening – hitting four field goals and scoring 12 of the Cougars' points – including his last of the evening to put Wazzu up by nine. The Cougar defense then slammed the door shut on any potential Cardinal comeback when Abdullah picked off Pritchard and took it into the end zone to seal the game.

Senior receiver Michael Bumpus caught seven passes for 97 yards in the game and became the Cougars' all-time career receptions leader, breaking the record previously held by Hugh Campbell.

The Cougars continue their 2007 season next week at Martin Stadium in Pullman against Oregon State on Saturday, November 17.
