Cougs Still Winless In Palo Alto
The Washington State University volleyball program is winless in Palo Alto in the school's history and the Cougars are still winless after traveling down to the Farm and losing to Stanford, 3-1 at Palo Alto. With the loss, the Cougars are now 14-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play in the 2009 season but also 0-24 lifetime at Palo Alto.
In the first set, Stanford ran off to a quick 7-2 lead but Wazzu responded with a 8-3 scoring run of their own to tie it up at 10. From there, the two teams traded the lead a few times before the Cardinal were able to stave off the Cougars, 25-23 at the end.
In the second set, the Cougars again fell behind early, 7-4, but rebounded with a 5-1 run to take a lead they would never relinquish en route to a 25-20 victory.
Wazzu raced out to a 4-0 lead in the third set but Stanford came roaring back with a 7-2 run to take the lead. As in the first set, the two teams again traded leads throughout the set but the Cardinal were again able to fend off the Cougars' charge to take the set, 25-22.
In the fourth set, Wazzu took a quick 3-1 lead but Stanford came back to tie the set at three apiece and, again, the Cardinal and Cougs engaged in a battle royale for the remainder of the set. Stanford eventually pulled out to a six point lead at 17-11 but Wazzu clipped that lead down to two at 24-22. But that was as close as they could get and Stanford put the set away for a 25-22 win.
Four Cougars were in double figures for kills, led by sophomore Meagan Ganzer with 14 and followed by senior Jackie Albright with 12, freshman Rachel Todorovich with 12 and junior Brittany Tillman with 10. There was a trio of Cougars in digs, led by freshman Oceana Bush with 21 digs while senior Kelly Hyder had 18 and Albright had 11. Senior setter Renee Bordelon added 10 to go along with her 49 assists.
Wazzu continues Pac-10 play against California at 7pm on Saturday, October 10 in Berkeley.
