Ducks Throttle Cougs

For a few minutes of the first quarter in Eugene, the Washington State University football team made a game of it with the Oregon Ducks. But two interceptions, a fumble and a safety later, it was all over early into the second quarter and the Oregon Ducks rolled to an easy 53-7 victory over the Cougars, keeping WSU winless in Pac-10 play at 0-4 and 2-5 overall.
Redshirt senior quarterback Alex Brink, returning to the area of his high school glory days when he led nearby Sheldon High School, had one of his worst days as a Cougar this year as he threw two early picks and coughed up a fumble that that resulted in 17 first-quarter points for the Ducks. That early momentum given to Oregon set the tone for the game and the Ducks went on to steamroll the Cougars on their way to an easy victory. Wazzu's only touchdown would come in the third quarter when, down 47-0, Brink found senior receiver Michael Bumpus with an eight-yard touchdown pass. The lone touchdown kept the Cougars' scoring streak alive at 268 consecutive games – currently, second-longest in the nation – but not much else.

The Oregon offense proved to be inscrutable for the Cougars as they laid the wood to the WSU defense for 551 yards of total offense and racked up both the most points they have ever scored in the series against WSU and registered the widest margin of victory.
The Cougars continue their 2007 season in two weeks with a home game against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, October 27, at Martin Stadium in Pullman.
