Gonzaga Holds Off Cougars

The Washington State University men's hoop team fell behind early but made a second half comeback that fell just short as Gonzaga held off the Cougars, 89-81 in Wazzu's regular season opener in Spokane. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 0-1 overall on the year.
Gonzaga opened up with the hot hand from the perimeter as the Bulldogs quickly opened up an 8-1 lead over the Cougars which they then stretched to 13 at 32-19 before Wazzu finally cut the deficit slightly and made it 41-32 going into the locker room at halftime.

Gonzaga bolted out to a 21-point advantage at 63-42 in the second half and appeared to be cruising in for a comfortable victory until Wazzu unleashed a scorching 36-18 run fueled by guards Reggie Moore and DaVonte Lacy that cut the Bulldogs lead to only three at 81-78. After Gonzaga added a free throw to their advantage, Lacy had a chance to slice the Bulldog lead to a single digit with a three-pointer. But Lacy's trey rimmed out and Gonzaga hit their free throws down the stretch as the Cougars were forced to foul to gain possessions.
Five Cougars were in double figures in scoring, led by Brock Motum with 17 and followed by Moore with 14, Mychal Ladd with 13, Faisel Aden with 12 and Lacy with 11. Motum also led Wazzu with eight rebounds.
NOTES:
- DJ Shelton received his first regular season playing time as a Cougar but recorded only one rebound and no points in nine minutes of action.
- Gonzaga out-rebounded the Cougars, 43-36 for the game.
