Highlanders Upset Cougars

The Washington State University men's hoop team came home from th e76 Classic winless after the University of California-Riverside Highlanders upset the Cougars, 64-63 in the 76 Classic in Anaheim. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 2-4 overall on the year.

Wazzu jumped out to a 10-point first half lead at 13-3 but allowed the University of California-Riverside to come back to within two at 19-17 before pulling out to an 11-point lead at 28-17 and finally settling on a seven=point advantage at 32-25 advantage going into the locker room at halftime.

Wazzu built as much as a 14-point lead in the second half, leading 56-42 with 7:05 remaining when the Highlanders came storming back and took just over three minutes to tie it up after a 14-0 run. With only 1:18 remaining in the game, UCR took their first lead at 62-60 but DaVonte Lacy hit a bucket and was fouled. Lacy added to free throw to give Wazzu a slim 63-62 margin that the Highlanders erased with the game-winning shot with 13 seconds left in the game. Point guard Reggie Moore missed a shot with four seconds left to seal the loss for the Cougars.

Three Cougars were in double figures in scoring, led by Brock Motum with 15 and followed by Faisal Aden with 14 and Moore with 10. Motum also led the Cougars with seven rebounds

NOTES:

- This is the poorest start for the Cougars after six games since the 1998-99 season.

- Wazzu out-rebounded the Highlanders, 38-31, in the game.
