Washington State looks for its first Pac-12 win in the state of Oregon since 2013 as it heads to the Beaver state to take on Oregon State and Oregon (15-8, 5-5) beginning Thursday against the Beavers in Corvallis.
Thursday nightās game matches up two struggling basketball teams. Both teams have won just once in the last calendar month, and a combined three times in the New Year.
The Cougars have won just once since Pac-12 play begin in Late December, and all the fuzzy and warm feelings generated from the 6-0 start and the Wooden Legacy championship have steadily evaporated under an avalanche of losses.
āOur guys are young and inexperienced and we lack some leadership, but they have tremendous character,ā Ernie Kent said. āIf they do turn the corner, our guys can take off because theyāve been there before and they know what it feels like. WE still have time, and the talent and character, to do it.ā
Thursday marks the 295th all-time meeting between Washington State and Oregon State. The Beavers hold a 169-125 advantage in the all-time series. Last season, WSU snapped a six-game losing streak to OSU as the Cougars prevailed, 75-62, in a game played at Spokane.
The two teams met just once in each of the last two seasons. The 2015-16 season marked the first time since 1917 that WSU and OSU didn't meet at least twice in a single season. It is the third-oldest continuous rivalry west of the Mississippi River.
Look for the Cougars to continue firing from long range. As a team, 51 percent of WSU's shots have come from 3-point range, while 46.3 percent of its points (759) are off 3-pointers. In contrast, WSU opponents are amassing 33.7 percent of their points off of 3-pointers.
Eighty-five percent of Carter Skaggs' shots are 3-pointers (123 of 144), while 83.0 percent of his points (168 of 202) have come from 3-pointers. Three Cougar players ā Skaggs (56), Robert Franks (54) and Malachi Flynn (57) ā have 50 or more made 3-pointers this season, while Viontāe Daniels has 48.
