The Washington State University men's hoop team led the game at halftime but the Oklahoma Sooners scorched the twine and caused turnovers in the second half to defeat the Cougars, 74-59 in the 76 Classic in Anaheim. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 2-2 overall on the year.
Wazzu was hot in the beginning of the game as they shot a blistering 64% in the first half as they tussled with Oklahoma for much of the period but could not put any sizable distance on the Sooners and it took Marcus Capers launching a 60-foot shot at the halftime buzzer to give Wazzu a 40-38 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was the exact opposite as the Sooners created Wazzu turnovers [22 for the game] and the Cougars were as cold in the second half as they were hot in the first half - shooting only 22% for the second period. Consequently, Oklahoma gradually pulled away for a comfortable win as the Cougars' shots could not find the net in the second half.
Two Cougars were in double figures in scoring, led by Brock Motum with 13 and Faisal Aden with 12. Motum led Wazzu with seven rebounds.
- Wazzu will play New Mexico in the consolation game of the 76 Classic in Anaheim.
- For the first time this season, Wazzu out-rebounded an opponent, out-rebounding Oklahoma, 35-32, for the game.
