The women's hoop predictions were revealed at the Creek last week and - surprise, surprise, - Stanford was picked to win the conference again. For the fifth time in a row, the Cardinal were predicted to win the conference title while UCLA received two first place votes and USC got one. In the men's predictions, Arizona was selected as the conference favorite.
Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, CBS will acquire CSTV [College Sports Television], a media entity devoted entirely to college sports, for $325 million next year. The purchase includes the company's online properties as well as the regional television networks for both the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA, planned for launch in 2006.
California
The 25th-ranked Bears lost to Oregon, 27-20, in overtime, to drop to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
In women's soccer, California advanced to the NCAA tournament and will play Rice in the first round.
In women's hoop, freshman center Devanei Hampton was suspended for the season opener against Eastern Washington, after violating team rules.
Stanford
The Cardinal lost to USC, 51-21, to drop to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Stanford received a verbal commitment from California offensive lineman Stephen Carr.
In women's soccer, Stanford will face Saint Louis in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Arizona State
The Sun Devils defeated WSU, 27-24, to improve to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Tight end Zach Miller is expected to miss this week's game against UCLA with an injured left foot.
Oregon
The 11th-ranked Ducks defeated California, 27-20, in overtime to move to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Defensive lineman Haloti Ngata was named as the conference's defensive player of the week. Oregon received a verbal commitment from quarterback Cody Kempt of Portland.
USC
The top-ranked Trojans defeated Stanford, 51-21, to remain undefeated at 9-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Quarterback Matt Leinart was named as the conference's offensive player of the week.
In women's soccer, the Women of Troy will play Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Freshman forward Amy Rodriguez was named as the conference's player of the week.
Oregon State
The Beavers defeated Washington, 18-10, to improve to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Kicker Alexis Serna was named as the conference's special teams player of the week.
UCLA
The 14th-ranked Bruins were upset by Arizona, 52-14, to drop to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
In women's soccer, UCLA will play Mississippi Valley State in the first round of the NCAA tournament
Junior middle blocker Nana Meriwether was named as the conference's player of the week.
In men's soccer, junior goalkeeper Eric Reed was named as the conference's player of the week.
WSU
The Cougars lost to Arizona State, 27-24, to drop to 3-6 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
In women's soccer, Wazzu defeated Washington, 1-0, in the Apple Cup of soccer, to finish the year at 11-7-2 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play.
In volleyball, WSU was swept at home by California and Stanford to drop to 8-18 overall and 1-12 in conference play
Arizona
The Wildcats upset UCLA, 52-14, to move to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Arizona received a verbal commitment from brothers [db]Rick Elmore[/db] [defensive lineman] and Cory Elmore [offensive lineman].
In women's soccer, Arizona will play Utah in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Washington
The Huskies lost to Oregon State, 18-10, to drop to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play. Linebacker Joe Lobendahn is out for the season with a knee injury and quarterback Johnny DuRocher is also likely out for the year with a broken hand. Washington received a verbal commitment from California JC defensive back Coye Francies.
