Nationally ranked Washington State continues its season-opening five-game homestand with a Saturday night nationally televised nonconference matchup against Boise State at Martin Stadium.
SERIES HISTORY: Washington State leads the all-time series with Boise State 4-1 after the Broncos claimed a 31-28 victory in Boise last season. The Cougars had won the previous four meetings including the 1997 and 2000 contests in Pullman. In 2000, a 42-35 WSU win, sophomore quarterback Jason Gesser threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another before WSU scored the game-winner with 1:15 remaining on a one-yard Adam Hawkins touchdown run.
LUKE FALK: After throwing for 311 yards on 33-of-39 passing against Montana State, Luke Falk is the NCAAās active leader in career passing yards (11,204), touchdown passes (92) and passing yards per game (350.1). His second touchdown pass against Montana State last week, a six-yard strike to Tavares Martin Jr. in the second quarter, was his 91st career touchdown pass, breaking Connor Hallidayās WSU record for career TD passes. He is 24 TD passes away from Matt Barkleyās (USC) Pac-12 record of 116. Falk enters Week 2 eeding 101 passing yards to break Hallidayās WSU career passing yards record of 11,304.
āOffensively, theyāve got guys, starting with their quarterback,ā Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. āLuke Falk is a great player. Going 20-for-20 at the beginning of a game is impressive for any quarterback. Overall, these guys have been doing this for a long time offensively. Coach Leach knows that system and how to move the ball down the field. They can be explosive.ā
JAMES WILLIAMS: He set a WSU single-game record for running backs with 13 receptions for 163 yards last week against Montana State. āThat guy can go,ā Harsin said. āHeās an all-purpose guy with the way they run their offense. Theyāre going to get the ball to him. They pitch it or throw check-downs to him. Heās going to make plays.ā
JAMAL MORROW: Running back Jamal Morrow does a little of everything for the Cougar offense - rushing, receiving and blocking. He owns the school record for receptions by a running back with 143 career catches, passing Steve Broussardās previous top WSU mark of 120. Morrow sits five receptions away from moving into the WSU Top-10 for receptions.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Washington State continued to spread the ball around with 10 different players catching a pass in the opener against Montana State. Last season, the Air Raid saw 10+ players catch a pass in 11 of the 13 games.
O-LINE BONE AWARD: Each week, Washington State coaches give out the āBone Awardā to the offensive lineman who performs the best during the previous game. Last week, right guard B.J. Salmonson earned his first career āBone Awardā following his outstanding play in the win over Montana State.
DEFENSE RISES: The WSU defense continued its rise under defensive coordinator Alex Grinch by posting the shutout over Montana State in Week 1, recording the first Cougar shutout since 2013 and holding MSU to 143 yards of total offense, fewest yards allowed since 2004 (125 vs. Colorado). WSU surrendered just 28 yards passing, fewest since 1994. The Cougars āSpeed Dā features nine returning starters from a 2016 group that forced 23 turnovers and held opponents to 134.2 rushing yards per game, third-lowest in the Pac-12 Conference. RJr. DL Hercules Mataāafa opened 2017 with 2.5 tackles-for-loss, including 1.5 sacks, against Montana State and enters Week 2 with 27 career TFL, tied for most among active Pac-12 players and 13.5 career sacks, second among active Pac-12 players.
BOISE STATE VS. POWER 5 SCHOOLS: The Broncos enter 2017 with a 14-6 record against Power 5 schools since the start of the 2006 season, and have won five of the past six games against Power 5 opponents. This year, Boise State travels to WSU and hosts Virginia (Sept. 22). Washington State is the first ranked opponent the Broncos have faced since Arizona in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl.
SECOND TEST AGAINST AIR RAID: Saturdayās matchup with Washington State will be Boise Stateās second in a row against an āAir Raidā offense. Last week, the Broncos fared well against Troy, holding the Trojans without an offensive touchdown, forced eight three-and-outs and limited Troy to just 205 total yards, including 76 on the ground. However, Boise State faces a much bigger test this week against Falk and his array of offensive weapons. The BSU secondary is led by a pair of veterans in junior cornerback Tyler Horton and senior safety Cameron Hartsfield.
TWO QUARTERBACKS AT BOISE STATE: Boise State utilized two quarterbacks in last Saturdayās win over Troy with starter Brett Rypien going 13-for-23 for 160 yards and an interception while Montell Cozart, a graduate transfer from Kansas, completed 6-of-9 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown and rushed eight times for 36 yards. Rypien has been Boise Stateās starting quarterback since Week 4 of the 2015 campaign. Will Boise State employ both quarterbacks again this week?
āIf you have two guys that are capable, and based on our video review it appears they do, itās a headache (for defensive coordinators,ā WSU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said when asked about preparing for two quarterbacks. āIt poses a challenge. Weāll find out Saturday what we see more of. We have to make sure we handle it right from a communications and game plan standpoint. We have to know whoās in the game.ā
