Stanford Escapes Cougars Grip
The Washington State University soccer team was a mere 3:12 away from the biggest upset in school history - but the Stanford Cardinal showed why they are the top-ranked team in the nation as they scored to tie the match and then took only slightly over four minutes to get the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over the Cougars at Cougarland Field in Pullman. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 10-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.
In the first half, as expected, Stanford dominated offensive play, holding the Cougars to only three shots while the Cardinal were able to fire off six shots of their own, but Wazzu junior goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo allowed none to pass and the two teams entered halftime in a 0-0 deadlock.
After 45 minutes of scoreless play, Stanford took two quick shots to open the second half but it was Wazzu who got on the board first when senior Elysse Van Leer took a cross from fellow senior Kiersten Dallstream in the box and fired it in for a 1-0 lead over Stanford just over eight minutes into the half. The Cougars fought off a barrage of Stanford shots until one finally got through past the defense and Berlingo with 3:12 remaining in the match to send it to overtime.
In overtime, Stanford took only a bit over four minutes to score the match-winner and the Cougars were unable to get the equalizer in the remaining time.
The Cougars were put under serious pressure in the latter portion of the second half - when the Cardinal outshot the Cougars, 8-1, in the last 16 minutes of the half - entire and wound up being outshot by the Cardinal, 22-7.
Washington State University continues the 2009 season against California at 11am on Sunday, October 25 at Cougarland Field in Pullman
