Trojans Dismantle Cougs

If they were to have an inkling of a chance against the nation's top-ranked team in their "house", that chance for the Washington State University Cougar football team would have to come from their offense. The Cougars knew it and so did the USC Trojans, the aforementioned top-ranked squad. It all looked good for Wazzu as they protruded into the vaunted Trojan defense on their first possession and senior quarterback Alex Brink went 6-for-10 on that first series to even the score against USC at 7-7 with a touchdown pass to tight end Jed Collins. But those were the bulk of the first half highlights for WSU and that was as close as they would come in the game as USC methodically destroyed the Cougars, 47-14, in Los Angeles to drop WSU to 2-2 on the year.
In what was an ominous sign of what was to come, the Trojans opened the game with starting quarterback John David Booty going 10-for-11 in the first series and carving up the Cougar defense as they easily marched down the field for the game's opening score. After the Cougars answered that with the Brink-led drive, the rout was on as USC scored 27 unanswered points. The Cougars were not able to score again until the third quarter when Brink hit Michael Bumpus with a 21-yard touchdown pass.

Brink finished the night 17-for-31 for 165 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Junior Gary Rogers replaced Brink in the fourth quarter and played out the final offensive series of the game for Wazzu.
The Cougars continue their 2007 season by traveling next week to face the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, September 29 in Tucson.
