Wazzu Disposes Of Redhawks
A slow start was to be expected of the Washington State University soccer team, who were coming off a double overtime Apple Cup tie with Washington on Friday. But Wazzu woke up in the second half and defeated the Seattle University Redhawks, 3-2 in Seattle. With the victory, the Cougars move to 8-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
In the first half, the Cougars were sluggish, managing only seven shots against Seattle's defense, which is buoyed by the presence of former Cougar goalkeeper Katie Hultin as a volunteer assistant coach. Wazzu was able to get at least one to go through as senior defender Maggie Dougher scored her first goal of the year on a header to give Wazzu the 1-0 lead after nearly 18 minutes of play. The Cougars were only able to enjoy the lead for about 13 minutes as the Redhawks answered with a header off a corner kick to tie the match going into the halftime break.
After that slow start, Wazzu was more energetic in the second half, pressuring the Redhawk defense until finally breaking through on a header from junior Ashley Johnson off a corner kick just a little over 25 minutes into the half to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. Then, two minutes later, sophomore Tiara Pittman put another ball into the back of the net and Wazzu led 3-1. Seattle responded with a goal of their own seven minutes later but Wazzu held on for the victory.
After only outshooting the Redhawks, 7-5, in the first half, Wazzu wound up with a 16-8 shots advantage by the end of the match.
