Wazzu Eclipses Sun Devils

With the memory of the last game against Arizona State – a slim 56-55 win in Tempe that came down to the last possession – the 17th-ranked Washington State University Cougars wanted to make sure there was no doubt this time. They did just that as, clinging to a 47-43 lead, redshirt junior Daven Harmeling hit the game-winning three-pointer from the corner with 2:24 remaining and Wazzu went on to pull away for a 59-47 win over the Sun Devils, giving Wazzu their second consecutive season series sweep of Arizona State. The win also keeps the Cougars in sole possession of third place in the Pac-10 at 9-5 and 21-5 overall. Senior guard Derrick Low led the team with 15 points.
Arizona State's Derek Glasser hit the game's opening points for a 2-0 Sun Devil lead but when Low responded 30 seconds later with his first three-pointer of the game, it marked the only time the Sun Devils would ever hold the lead in the game. The Cougars gradually pulled out to a trio of first half seven-point leads, first at 13-6, then at 19-12 and finally at 22-15, but could not completely put ASU away as the Sun Devils fought back to tie the game at 26-all before Caleb Forrest and Taylor Rochestie put Wazzu up 30-26 at halftime.

In the second half, the Cougars pulled out to a nine-point lead when Harmeling hit the first of his two treys, but could muster only four points in the next eight minutes and watched as the Sun Devils again, slowly climbed back into the game. The Cougars regained new life when junior center Aron Baynes stole the ball and went the distance for a slam dunk for a 45-40 lead with 6:04 left. Although the Sun Devils were able to keep their distance for a few more minutes, Harmeling's second three-ball officially sealed the deal and the Cougars hit nine free throws the rest of the way to secure the victory. Rochestie and Baynes each finished with 10 points behind Low and Rochestie led the team with seven boards
The Cougars will next play Arizona at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 23 at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.
