Wazzu Scorches Sun Devils
After a slow start in last week's final non-conference tune-up win over Seattle, the Washington State University soccer team experienced no such sluggishness in the first half of this week's first match against Arizona State as they scorched ASU with two goals approximately four minutes apart in the first half and then made those stand up for the remainder of the match to secure a 2-1 victory over the Sun Devils in Seattle. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 9-3-1 overall and move into a third-place tie with Washington at 1-0-1 in conference play.
In the first half, the two teams skirmished in what would be a prolonged defensive battle throughout the match until Wazzu finally broke through just over 32 minutes into the match when senior Kiersten Dallstream received a pass from fellow senior Carly Dobratz and beat the Sun Devil goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish. It was Dallstream's 12th goal of the season and 29th of her career. A mere four minutes later, the Cougars were knocking on the door again and this time it was true freshman Melanie Johnston scoring her first goal of her Cougar career to put Wazzu up 2-0 going into the halftime break.
The Cougars had outshot the Sun Devils 8-2 in the first frame but the roles were reversed in the second period as ASU peppered junior goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo with seven shots but Berlingo allowed only one through and Wazzu was able to fend off the Sun Devils for the win.
The Cougars wound up with the total shots advantage again, this time 11-9 by the end of the match. Head coach Matt Potter won his first match ever against Arizona State on the road and it was the first time in school history Wazzu had defeated the Sun Devils in back-to-back years.
Washington State University continues the 2009 season against the University of Arizona at 1pm on Sunday, October 18 in Tucson
