Wazzu Slams Huskies

Turns out 13 was an unlucky number for the University of Washington volleyball program. The Huskies were carrying a 12-match winning streak into the first half of the Apple Cup of volleyball match-up against the Cougars and it looked like it would become 13 after Washington took the first set of the match. But Wazzu came storming back and thrashed the Huskies in the next three sets to claim the victory before 2,724 fans and well-wishers at Bohler Gym in Pullman. With the win, the Cougars are now 16-4 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
It looked ominous for the Cougars in the first set as Washington came out on fire and easily blocked any Cougar attempts at comebacks en route to a convincing 25-18 victory. But that is where the Husky dominance would end on for evening.
Head coach Andrew Palileo and his staff made an adjustment after the first set and Wazzu did not allow the Huskies to take a big lead in the second set. The two teams stayed close - very close, there were 13 ties throughout the set - until the Cougars finally broke away with a late surge to claim the set, 25-22.
The third set was going down the same path as the previous set as the two teams were once again battling tooth and nail and tied at 15 when the Cougars exploded on an 8-4 run that put them in control of the set where they finished off the Huskies for a 25-21 win.
Washington was not going down easy and took a five-point lead in the fourth and final set, at 11-6. Wazzu came back to tie it at 11 and the two teams again battled closely from there until, tied at 21, the Cougars ended the match on a 4-1 run for their first victory over the Huskies in seven years.
Three Cougars were in double figures in kills led by sophomore Meagan Ganzer with 15, followed by senior Cassie Robbins with 12 and junior Brittany Tillman with 10. True freshman Oceana Bush led another Cougar trio in double figures in digs as she tallied 23 digs while senior Jackie Albright had 22 and senior Kelly Hyder chipped in 14. Senior setter Renee Bordelon added 43 assists.
Wazzu continues Pac-10 play against Arizona State at 7pm on Friday, October 30 at in Tempe.
