Wazzu Slaps Down USC
The Washington State University volleyball team had already defeated USC once this calendar year - back in the spring in an off-season match in Los Angeles. But the Cougars made it count for real this time as Wazzu swept the Women of Troy before 2028 fans and well-wishers at Bohler Gym In Pullman. With the win, the Cougars are now 15-3 overall and are in a third-place tie with Arizona at 4-3 in conference play.
Wazzu scored the first six points of the match in the first set, and after a brief USC scoring run, extended that lead to nine at 16-7. The Women of Troy were unable to get much closer as the Cougars closed them out with a 25-17 win in the set.
The second set was a different story as the two teams fought tooth and nail for much of the set, a battle which resulted in nine ties throughout the set. The two squads were knotted for their ninth tie of the set at 26 apiece when sophomore Meagan Ganzer hit a cross-court kill for the lead and freshman Rachel Todorovich and junior Brittany Tillman teamed up for a set-ending block to clinch the win at 28-26.
The third and final set was nearly tied throughout the entire contest - the third set featured a mind-boggling 16 ties. The score was tied, naturally, at 23-all when Ganzer and Tillman recorded back-to-back points for the Cougars and Wazzu took the set and match, 25-23.
Ganzer led the Cougars in kills with 15 while Todorovich chipped in 10. Senior Jackie Albright and true freshman Oceana Bush had 15 digs apiece to lead the team. Senior setter Renee Bordelon added 40 assists.
Wazzu continues Pac-10 play against UCLA at 7pm on Saturday, October 17 at Bohler Gym in Pullman.
