Wazzu Slips By Arizona State
The NCAA tournament got another match closer for the Washington State University volleyball team as they completed a home sweep of the Arizona schools by finishing off Arizona State, 3-2 at Bohler Gym in Pullman. With the victory, Wazzu has now won 17 of their last 19 matches carrying over from last year, and are now 14-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play in the 2009 season.
Once again, nearly every set was a battle and the opening set saw neither team go out to more than a two-point advantage until Wazzu took a 13-9 lead which they gradually expanded to four, then five and finally finished off the Sun Devils with a six-point victory in the set at 25-19.
In the second set, the two teams battled tooth and nail through the first five points, then ASU took off for a nine-point lead at 16-7 and held it to 19-10 when Wazzu embarked on a 10-1 run that tied the set at 20-all. But the Cougars could never wrest the lead from the Sun Devils and ASU held on for a 26-24 win in the set.
The third set was a nightmare set for the Cougars as the Sun Devils ran away early and often and easily beat the Cougars, 25-13 in the set. Faced with their first possible home loss of the season, Wazzu responded in a big way in the fourth set, taking a quick 8-1 lead and holding a comfortable margin throughout the set until finally winning it at 25-17 to force the fifth and final set.
In that set, again, the Cougars took off early, racing to a 4-1 lead, but the Sun Devils would not let them get as far this time, closing the gap to one at 5-4. But the Sun Devils could never grab the lead and, having successfully fended off ASU's challenge, Wazzu went from a 9-7 lead to a 15-10 victory to preserve their home unbeaten streak at nine matches so far this year.
Four Cougars were in double figures for kills, led by sophomore Meagan Ganzer with 20 kills and followed by seniors Cassie Robbins with 14 and Jackie Albright with 13 while junior Brittany Tillman added 11. There was a quartet of Cougars in digs, led by freshman Oceana Bush with a stunning 39 digs while Albright had 19, senior Kelly Hyder had 12 and senior setter Renee Bordelon added 10 to go along with her 53 assists.
Wazzu continues Pac-10 play against Stanford at 7pm on Friday, October 9 in Palo Alto.
