Wazzu Stops Stanford

The Washington State University Cougar men's hoop team was down by nine points at the halftime break but the Cougars battled all the way back against Stanford in the second half and junior Abe Lodwick nailed two crucial free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining in the game to give Wazzu a 61-58 win over the Cardinal in Palo Alto - the first home loss for Stanford this year. With the victory, Wazzu improves to 3-3 in conference play and 13-5 overall.
Stanford scored the game's first four points but Wazzu came right back with six straight of their own to briefly take a 6-4 lead when junior shooting guard Klay Thompson hit a bucket. After Stanford tied it at six, fellow junior Faisal Aden put the Cougars up 8-6 but that was the last lead the Cougars would have in the half as the Cardinal went on a 7-0 run and wound up holding off the Cougars for a 32-23 lead going into the locker room at halftime as the Cardinal's league-leading defense held the Cougars to under 25 points for the half.

But Wazzu came roaring back in the first five minutes of the second half with a 10-1 run to tie the game at 33 apiece. The two teams stayed close for the next few minutes with Wazzu finally taking a 42-41 lead on a lay-in from sophomore Brock Motum with 10:14 left in the game. Neither Stanford nor Wazzu could get more than five points away from each other in the rest of the half. After a pair of free throws from junior forward DeAngelo Casto gave the Cougars a 59-55 lead, Stanford cut it to two at 59-57. Stanford's Josh Owens made one of two free throws to cut the lead to 59-58 before Lodwick was fouled on the rebound and hit the game's final points. A final desperation three-point heave by the Cardinal went astray.
Thompson led the Cougars in double figures with a game-high 21 points followed by fellow junior Faisal Aden with 20 points. Casto and Lodwick each pulled down eight rebounds for the Cougars.
NOTES
- Sophomore point guard Reggie Moore was suspended before the game by head coach Ken Bone in an action related to Moore's arrest for marijuana possession last month.
