Wazzu Sweeps Arizona
The NCAA tournament just got one match closer for the Washington State University volleyball team. The Cougars had their 12-match win streak broken by Oregon on Sunday but started a new winning streak on Friday by sweeping Arizona at Bohler Gym in Pullman in front of an attendance of 1446. With the victory, Wazzu has now won 16 of their last 18 matches carrying over from last year, and are now 13-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
All sets were battles for the Cougars and Wildcats but it appeared to be a cakewalk in the first set as Wazzu jumped out to a 9-2 lead right off the bat. But Arizona gradually battled back and eventually closed the gap to two at 23-21 before the Cougars put it away for good by scoring the final two points.
In the second set, Wazzu again took a quick lead at 4-1 but this time, the Wildcats did not let them run away with the set and 9-7 lead. Arizona held a 10-9 lead until the Cougars scored three consecutive points for a 12-10 lead and were never behind again in the set. The two teams were nip and tuck throughout the remainder of the set but Wazzu held off the Wildcats at the end for a 25-22 win.
In the third and final set, Arizona turned the tables on the Cougars by taking a quick lead which they extended to six at 10-4. Wazzu never let the Wildcats get more than six points distant from them but were down 24-19 when they reeled off seven straight points to win the set and match, 26-24.
Sophomore Meagan Ganzer led the Cougars in double figures in kills with 12. Freshman Oceana Bush had 18 digs while senior Jackie Albright added 10 and senior setter Renee Bordelon had 41 assists.
Wazzu continues Pac-10 play against Arizona State at 7pm on Saturday, October 3 at Bohler Gym in Pullman.
