Wazzu Sweeps Wildcats Away

The extra-young Washington State University women's hoop team has gradually been improving over the course of the season and with that improvement comes new and updated achievements. The newest achievement came as Wazzu swept the season series from Arizona by defeating the Wildcats, 63-56 in Tucson. The win not only improved their record to 11-16 overall and 4-12 in the Pac-10 but gave Wazzu their first three- game win streak over a Pac-10 opponent in 10 years, when USC was the victim.
Freshman guard scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Cougars in scoring. Wazzu freshman sensations Jazmine Perkins and April Cook joined Lenoir in double figures with 12 points apiece.

It was a low-scoring affair in the first five minutes as Arizona took the early 3-2 lead and held off the Cougars for the next few minutes with a slim 10-9 advantage nine minutes into the game. The Wildcats finally were able to put a gap between themselves and the Cougars after taking an 18-13 lead. But Wazzu unleashed a 13-3 run over the next four and a half minutes to take a 26-21 lead. From there, the Cougars were able to hold off the Wildcats and take a 32-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Arizona re-took the lead in the first four minutes at 35-34 but Wazzu would not go away and took the lead back at 38-36 with 13:55 left in the nip-and-tuck contest. The Cougars then went on another run – this time, 13-7 – and began to pull away with an eight-point lead at 51-43 with 7:30 left in the game which they extended to a nine-point lead at 55-46 with 3:50 left in the game. Wazzu built the lead out to 11 at 59-48 before finishing off the Wildcats for good.
Senior center Heather Molzen led the Cougars in rebounds with seven.
Wazzu's next game is against Arizona State at 4pm on Saturday, February 28 in Tempe.
