Wildcats Edge Cougars

The Washington State University Cougar men's hoop team gave fifth-ranked Kansas State all they could handle but the Wildcats pulled out a close 63-58 win at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season and drop them to 5-1 overall.
Sophomore point guard Reggie Moore and junior forward DeAngelo Casto, both coming off injuries [wrist for Moore and foot sprain for Casto], played 38 and 33 minutes, respectively, for Wazzu and it looked good early on for the Cougars as it was all knotted up at 14 apiece after a pair of free throws from sophomore Brock Motum halfway through the first period. But Kansas State went on a 16-8 run to end the half and went into the locker room with a 30-22 advantage.

Wazzu made a comeback in the second half as junior guard Klay Thompson helped to fuel the effort. After the Wildcats built their largest lead of the game at 35-25 just over a minute into the second half, Wazzu unloaded a 29-18 run - including a crucial trey from Thompson - to take a slim 54-53 lead with 2:34 remaining in the game. But Kansas State, showing why they are ranked so highly, fought off the Cougar comeback attempt in scoring the next five points and never allowing the Cougars to retake the lead. The Wildcats hit five free throws in the game's final 16 seconds to secure the victory.
Thompson and Moore were the only Cougars in double digits in scoring with Thompson leading the way with 16 points and Moore chipping in 10 points. Casto led Wazzu with seven rebounds.
NOTES
- Official attendance for the game was 11,671.
