Wildcats Roll Over Cougs

The notion of losing this football game struck terror in the hearts of both teams as Arizona and Washington State face tough remaining schedules and would need the win as a brace against the future. Both teams came in with nearly identical offensive prowess, defensive liabilities and head coaches on the proverbial hot seats. But only one team could emerge victorious from the fray and that team turned out to be the Wildcats, as they turned a close game into a rout in the fourth quarter and won, 48-20, in Tucson.
Arizona opened up the scoring by nearly driving the length of the field, only to have Wazzu stop them and hold them to a field goal. The Cougar offense responded with a workman-like nine-play drive that resulted in a 16-yard touchdown pass from redshirt senior quarterback Alex Brink to senior receiver Charles Dillon for a 7-3 first quarter lead. It would be the only lead the Cougars would ever have. The Wildcats scored 17 unanswered points before WSU scored their next touchdown and it was 20-13 at the half.

The Cougars were able to tie the game at 20 when Brink – who threw the ball 56 times and captured the school career record for pass attempts – hit junior Brandon Gibson with his third touchdown pass of the evening. But Arizona then went on another scoring spree – scoring on three of their next four possessions on their way to an eventual 28-point win. The Wildcats improve to 3-2 while the Cougars drop to 2-3 overall on the year.
The Cougars continue their 2007 season with a home game against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday, October 6, at Martin Stadium in Pullman.
