WSOC: Cougs win 1-0 on penalty kick in 28th minute

A penalty in the box in the 28th minute was all the Washington State soccer team (1-1-0) needed to secure its first win of the young season as the Cougs downed Saint Mary's (1-2-0), 1-0, Friday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field.

Set up by a foul on freshman Sydney Pulver inside the 18, junior defender Maddy Haro slotted home the Cougs' first goal of the season from the penalty spot less than 30 minutes into the game.

The goal, Haro's first of the season, would hold up for all 90 minutes of action as the WSU defense was up to the task to secure their second-straight shutout of the regular season.

Redshirt-junior Ella Dederick, the reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week, was rarely tested, facing just one shot on goal in nine Gael attempts.

Coach's Quote Of The Match "If you look at it we're three games and haven't given up a goal. We've got some growing up front, but we're pretty seasoned in the back with our goalkeeper. It helps to get a clean-sheet. You can't deny that at all, so that is a positive. We just have to get better on the ball and produce some more goals here."
